If you're planning your wedding, you'll probably have a hundred and one things to think about. Finding your venue, choosing your flowers, deciding what to wear and, of course, working out how you want your wedding day to feel.
But there's one really important part of your day that deserves a little thought of its own: your wedding ceremony.
You might have heard people talking about registrars and celebrants and wondered what the difference actually is. Aren't they both there to marry you?
Well, not quite! And understanding the difference could open up some lovely possibilities for your wedding day.
As Corinne Smart Celebrant, I love helping couples discover what's possible when it comes to creating a ceremony that's personal, meaningful and completely their own. So, let's look at the options and help you decide what might be right for you.
So, what's the difference between a registrar and a celebrant?
Let's start with the basics.
A registrar is responsible for conducting a civil marriage ceremony that meets the legal requirements for marriage. Registrars work within the registration service and follow the rules that apply to civil ceremonies.
An independent celebrant, like me, works with couples to create and lead a personalised ceremony that celebrates their relationship, their story and the promises they want to make to one another.
The biggest difference is the freedom you have to shape your ceremony.
A registrar-led civil ceremony follows a legally prescribed structure and has restrictions on its content. A celebrant-led ceremony offers much greater flexibility over the words, music, readings, rituals and personal touches you include.
And the lovely thing is that there's no single right answer. It really comes down to the kind of ceremony you want.
What can you expect from a registrar ceremony?
A registrar ceremony is a wonderful option if you're looking for a straightforward civil marriage ceremony.
Your registrar will guide you through the legal declarations and vows, making sure the necessary formalities are completed. You'll also sign the marriage schedule as part of the legal process.
There are rules about what can be included in a civil ceremony, including restrictions on religious content, and the ceremony must take place in a location where the legal requirements are met.
Depending on your local registration service and the type of ceremony you choose, you may have some options for readings, music and personal touches. It's always worth asking your registrar what is permitted.
For some couples, this is exactly what they're looking for. They want a simple, meaningful ceremony that makes their marriage legal, and that's absolutely fine.
However, if you've been imagining something more personal, with stories about your relationship, special rituals or a ceremony in a location that's meaningful to you, you might want to explore what a celebrant can offer.
And what about a celebrant-led ceremony?
Now, this is where things get really exciting!
As a celebrant, I have the opportunity to get to know you as a couple and create a ceremony around your relationship, your personalities and your love story.
Rather than starting with a standard script, I start with you.
How did you meet? What first attracted you to each other? What makes you laugh? What have you been through together? What do you admire most about one another?
It's often the little details that make a story special, and I love discovering those moments that make your relationship uniquely yours.
From there, we can build a ceremony that feels natural, heartfelt and full of personality.
Perhaps you'd love something romantic and emotional. Maybe you want plenty of laughter, a few stories that make your guests smile, or a relaxed ceremony that feels more like you than anything traditional.
We can explore readings, personal vows, favourite music, symbolic rituals and ways to involve the people who mean the most to you.
Want to include your children in a special moment? We'd love to explore that. Have a family tradition you'd like to honour? Let's talk about it. Dreaming of a handfasting ceremony, a ring-warming ritual or something completely different? There are so many possibilities.
Your ceremony doesn't need to look like anyone else's. It can reflect who you are, what you believe in and the future you're choosing to build together.
And because the ceremony is created specifically for you, we can give those important moments the time and attention they deserve.
Where can you hold your ceremony?
This is another area where the two options can differ.
Registrar-led legal marriage ceremonies must take place in accordance with the applicable legal requirements. Depending on the ceremony, this generally means a register office or an approved venue.
With a celebrant-led ceremony, you have much greater freedom to choose a location.
Perhaps you've fallen in love with a beautiful country house, a garden filled with roses or a venue that holds special memories for you. Maybe you dream of exchanging your promises beneath an arch of flowers, surrounded by your favourite people.
You could choose a woodland setting, a family garden, a rustic barn or somewhere that means something special to your relationship.
And if you've always imagined an outdoor ceremony, a celebrant can help you explore how to make that dream a reality.
Of course, you'll still need to check the venue's permission, access arrangements and any relevant restrictions, but you're not limited to a location approved for a legal marriage ceremony simply to hold your celebrant-led celebration there.
Just imagine standing together in a place you love, with your favourite people around you, hearing a ceremony written especially for the two of you. It's a lovely thought, isn't it?
Can you include religious, spiritual or cultural elements?
Absolutely, in a celebrant-led ceremony.
One of the things I love about personalised ceremonies is that they can reflect the beliefs, backgrounds and traditions that matter to each couple.
You might want to include a spiritual blessing, a cultural tradition, a meaningful reading, a symbolic ritual or a combination of different influences that reflect your lives together.
Perhaps you come from different backgrounds and want to honour both families. Maybe there's a tradition that's been passed down through generations, or a ritual you'd like to introduce as you begin your married life.
A celebrant can work with you to explore these ideas and incorporate them thoughtfully into your ceremony.
A civil ceremony conducted by a registrar has restrictions on religious content, so if including particular traditions or spiritual elements is important to you, it's worth discussing your options before deciding.
What about involving family and friends?
Your wedding day is about the two of you, but it's also a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the people who have helped shape your lives.
With a celebrant-led ceremony, there are lots of ways to give your loved ones a meaningful role.
You could ask a family member to share a reading, invite your children to take part in a symbolic ritual, or ask someone special to tell a short story about your relationship.
Perhaps you'd like to include a ring-warming ceremony, where your wedding rings are passed among your guests, or a family ritual that represents the joining of two families.
You could even invite your guests to make a promise to support you in your marriage.
These moments can bring so much warmth to a ceremony and help everyone feel part of the celebration.
Of course, you don't have to include lots of different elements. Sometimes one simple, meaningful moment is all you need.
The beauty of a bespoke ceremony is that we can choose what feels right for you.
Will a celebrant ceremony be more personal?
If personalisation is high on your list, a celebrant-led ceremony is certainly worth considering.
A registrar ceremony must meet legal requirements and follow the rules for civil marriage ceremonies. There may be some opportunities to personalise it, but there are limits to what can be included.
With a celebrant, we can create the ceremony from the ground up.
We can tell your story, include the details that make you smile, acknowledge the people who matter to you and shape the ceremony around the atmosphere you're hoping to create.
And it's not just about adding your names to a script.
It's about creating something that feels authentic to you both. Something that makes you look at each other and think, Yes, this is us.
I want you to feel comfortable, relaxed and able to be yourselves. Whether that means happy tears, a little laughter or a mixture of the two, your ceremony should give you the space to enjoy the moment.
Is a celebrant more expensive than a registrar?
This is a question many couples understandably ask when they're working out their wedding budget.
The cost of a registrar ceremony varies depending on your local council, the type of ceremony, the location and the date. A celebrant's fee also varies according to the service offered, the preparation involved, travel and other arrangements.
It's worth comparing like with like rather than looking at the ceremony fee alone.
If you choose a celebrant-led ceremony, remember to factor in the cost of arranging your legal marriage separately in England and Wales. You'll also need to consider venue hire and any additional services you choose.
A celebrant-led ceremony doesn't have to mean an extravagant wedding. You can create something beautiful and personal at a scale and budget that work for you.
The most important thing is to understand what's included and choose the option that feels right for your plans.
Can you have both a registrar and a celebrant?
Yes! And this is something I'd encourage you to explore if you'd love a personal celebrant-led ceremony but also want to make sure your legal marriage is taken care of.
Many couples in England and Wales arrange their legal marriage separately, often through a register office, and then have a celebrant-led ceremony to celebrate with their family and friends.
This means you can complete the legal formalities in a way that suits you and have a separate ceremony shaped around your relationship.
You might choose to keep the legal part small and intimate, with just a couple of witnesses, before celebrating with a larger group at your dream venue.
Or perhaps you'd prefer to complete the legal formalities on a different day and make your wedding celebration all about your story, your promises and the people you love.
There are lots of ways to approach it.
Just remember that, in England and Wales, a ceremony conducted by an independent celebrant is generally not legally binding in itself. Make sure you understand the legal arrangements and check the requirements with your local register office.
So, which option is right for you?
Let's make it simple.
A registrar may be the right choice if you'd like a legal civil marriage ceremony with a straightforward format and you're happy with the options available.
A celebrant may be the right choice if you'd love a ceremony that tells your story, includes meaningful personal touches and gives you greater freedom over the location, content and style.
And if you'd love both the legal marriage and a highly personalised celebration, you can explore combining the two.
There's no need to choose an option because you think it's what everyone else does. Think about what matters to you, how you want your ceremony to feel and the memories you'd like to take away from the day.
Let's create a ceremony that's all about you
If you've just started planning your wedding, you might not have thought much about your ceremony yet. And that's absolutely fine!
But I'd love you to think beyond the flowers, the venue and the photographs for a moment.
Imagine standing together, surrounded by the people who mean the most to you, listening to a ceremony that reflects your journey as a couple. A ceremony filled with the little details that make your relationship special, the promises you want to make and the excitement of everything that lies ahead.
That's what I love about being a celebrant.
I'm Corinne Smart, and I love helping couples create personal, meaningful wedding ceremonies that reflect who they are and the love they share.
Whether you're dreaming of a romantic garden wedding, a beautiful countryside setting or something completely different, I'd love to hear what you're planning.
You don't need to have everything figured out. We can start with a conversation about you, your story and what you'd love your wedding ceremony to be.
Your wedding day should feel like you. And your ceremony is the perfect place to start.
If you're newly engaged and beginning to explore your options, get in touch. I'd love to hear your story and talk about how we could create something truly special together.
